Plan a high school biology unit that moves from observing cells to explaining their structures and predicting membrane transport. This library brings together reference pages, study tasks, models, an introductory microscope lab, and an egg investigation. AP classes can use the extension prompts where indicated.
Choose a route through the unit
First encounter with cells: start with microscope parts and the microscope lab, then use cell parts and the structure study guide. Structure and function: follow the reference with an analogy or a physical model, requiring explanations of the model’s limits. Membrane transport: introduce the bilayer, work through gradients and tonicity, check understanding, and then consider the egg investigation.
These routes are suggestions rather than a fixed pacing guide. Adjust them to equipment access, prior learning, and the course’s required depth.
Observe cells and learn the equipment
- Microscope Parts and Functions — Identify controls, calculate magnification, and prepare for safe use.
- Microscope Lab — Prepare a wet mount and investigate image orientation and field of view.
Explain cell organization
- Cell Parts — Connect plant, animal, and bacterial structures to their functions.
- Cell Structure and Function Study Guide — Practice comparisons, diagrams, and a protein-secretion explanation.
- Cell Analogy — Build a functional comparison and identify where the analogy fails.
- Cell Model Instructions — Construct or draw a cell with labels, process arrows, and a model critique.
Investigate membranes and transport
- Cell Membrane Coloring Sheet — Use the legacy worksheet with corrections or complete an original bilayer drawing task.
- Cell Membrane and Transport Study Guide — Connect membrane permeability, gradients, proteins, and energy.
- Osmosis and Diffusion — Work through water movement, tonicity, examples, and misconceptions.
- Diffusion Across Membranes — Use six original questions as a quick formative check.
- Osmosis and Diffusion in an Egg Lab — Measure percentage mass change and evaluate the egg model with raw-egg safety controls.
- Cellular Transport Review — Use original cumulative questions, feedback, and notes for the legacy download.
Before assigning a resource
- Check prerequisites and choose the introductory or AP extension task.
- Read the lab safety and preparation notes before obtaining materials.
- Open any Word download in compatible software and check its layout. Some legacy files contain simplifications that the page’s teacher notes flag.
- Choose an accessible response format: written labels, patterns, oral explanations, or annotated diagrams can replace color-dependent or craft-heavy products.
Check what students can explain
Ask students to name the moving substance, state membrane permeability, and justify the initial net direction. For models, ask which features are simplified. For labs, require measurements, units, uncertainty, and a distinction between observations and interpretations.
The new on-page questions include explanations where provided. Legacy downloads do not have a newly verified answer key. External readings are linked for reference; their text, images, and assessments are not reproduced here.
